Our board-certified ocularist uses highly-specialized technology to create one-of-a-kind prosthetic eyes. These procedures are delicate and very personal. You may have some uncertainty and anxiety associated with receiving an ocular prosthesis. We are here to help guide you through the process, to ensure comfort and confidence.
First visit (3 hours long)
We will determine your pupil size and the base color of your iris, and take an impression to determine the contours of your eye socket.
We will then make a polished wax model of your future prosthesis. It will be inserted and modified to determine comfort, primary gaze, proper lid relationship, and maximum movement.
Second Visit (2 hours long)
The wax model of your prosthesis has gone through the initial processing and is ready for painting. To assure maximum accuracy and realism, both the iris (color) and the sclera (white) of the eye are painted and detailed while you’re present.
Final fitting (1 hour)
This visit must take place at least 3 hours after your second visit, to allow enough time for your prosthesis to go through its final processing.
Before you arrive, the prosthesis will have its final grinding, pumicing, and polishing. Your prosthesis will be inserted and final adjustments will be made. We will make sure you know how to handle and care for your new prosthesis. Finally, we’ll send you home with a special treat to celebrate your new eye!
Follow-up (30 minutes)
Around 6 weeks after your final fitting, we’ll check the fit, comfort, and appearance of your prosthesis after you’ve gotten used to wearing it. Minor adjustments may be made as needed.
You should come in every 6 months to one year to have your prosthetic examined and polished.
